Chiropractic is the third largest field of medicine, and uses gentle pressure and manipulation of the spine to relieve irritation on the nerves which run through the centre of the spinal column. Many chiropractors believe that all babies should have their spines assessed shortly after birth. It is during a child’s formative years that the spine is at its most vulnerable. Even before it is born, a baby’s head, neck and back is placed under a lot of stress as it moves within the womb. This trauma is often further increased during the birth process, especially if this is prolonged, breach or involves a forceps delivery. Slight damage to your baby's spine may cause several problems which can lead to an irritable baby. These include:
- Colic
- Poor feeding
- Unsettled sleep patterns
- Crying, restless, easily startled
- Unhappy lying on his back
- Prefers to feed on one side
- Reflux
- Tendency to face one side
- Plagiocephaly, or flat head
